THE STAYCATION EXPERIENCE

Ciao again digital tourists! This past week we’ve been exploring the Italian fashion capital, but it’s time to catch a train back to the Mediterranean sea. We’ve arrived in Cinque Terre! This beautiful area and its colourful houses are all protected by the Cinque Terre national park and its label as a UNESCO heritage site. Are you just joining us now? For the past three months we’ve been exploring the Italian motherland through our blogs, learning about each destination each week & recommending interactive ways to bring their essence into your staycations.

Week 12: Cinque Terre

The name for this little region means “five lands”, today this you can explore all of these, which are little villages speckled along the coastline of the Italian Riviera. The towns are: Vernazza, Monterosso al Mare, Manarola, Riomaggiore, Corniglia. Each town has their own train station, but you can also hike between them, or take the local ferry. So choose your method of transport, and let’s start exploring!

Pizza Cinque Terre

Enjoy the flavours of Cinque Terre with this week’s pizza specially created by the Made in Italy chef’s, featuring: Tomato Base, Spicy Salami, Italian Sausage, Eggplant, Mushroom, Oregano and Mozzarella. ORDER TONIGHT Alexandria, Annandale, Pyrmont, Rose Bay, Sydney CBD

To See in Cinque Terre

Get your fix of Italian beach goodness at Monterosso’s main beach, Spaggia Fegina. The paid part of the beach is dotted with picturesque sun umbrellas, making it a good photography spot. It also has an idyllic rock cliff cutting in the middle of the water, marking its uniqueness. If you want to enjoy some swimming without the fee, the beach is long enough to find a spot.

End your day by watching sunset from the rocks at Manarola. The sun sets over the ocean, whilst you see the pastel-coloured houses on the cliffside slowly lighting up. You can also go down to the natural swimming pool, where you’ll see the sun set behind the mountains instead.

To Do in Cinque Terre

Hike along the cliffs through each of the towns that make up Cinque Terre. The ‘Sentiero Azzurro’ (the Blue Path Trail) is the longest and the most renowned trails in the Cinque Terre. It’s 12km long, and has jaw dropping sights throughout. Some landslides in 2012 led the trail to suffer some extreme damages, but it is expected to be open to travelers again by 2021!

If you don’t mind splashing out, there is no better way to experience the sights Cinque Terre has to offer than from the water. You can take one of many independent boat tours, or hire a boat yourself. From Monterosso al Mare, you can take a tour that has evening tapas, bubbles & antipasti.

Flavours of Cinque Terrre

The lush cliffs of Cinque Terre flourish with vineyards, these ones producing a local wine that is white and sweet. Pair this white with seafood, particularly the anchovies that feature in a lot of restaurants’ dishes. Another specialty of the region is pesto pasta, a perfect compliment to the white wines!

Bringing Cinque Terre Home

Turn on the television and go on a visual journey of the cliffside villages. The slow-paced flick 1991 Enchanted April was filmed entirely on location in Cinque Terre. To match, make sure to try our weekly special. The Pizza Cinque Terre which has Spicy Salami, Italian Sausage, Eggplant, Mushroom, Oregano and Mozzarella. What a treat!

Enjoy you staycation and the sites, sounds and flavours of Cinque Terre and we look forward to taking you on another adventure next week!
